Lets not bury the lead here. Alex Bregman is a Red Sox. That’s the bottom line or top line here. The long drought in the Red Sox actually acquiring top free agent talent, Is over. 3 years 120 million dollars is the Number it took to bring Alex Bregman to Boston. Feels a lot like a David Price overpay. In fact it is. The Sox coughed up ten million more in AVV than the next highest bidder for the slugging gold glove third basemen. There’s time to get into that later. An extra Ten Mill ? that’s the cost of bringing someone here. To Boston.
Now let’s get to the heart of the matter. Whose influence made this move happen? Was it the stat geek analytics driven CBO of the Red Sox Craig Breslow ? doesn’t sound like him. Guys like Breslow don’t give 40 million a year to guys who are moments away from the wrong side of thirty. Whose numbers are nowhere near his best seasons of half a decade ago. Or does this sound like someone who has the ear of John Henry ? I’m thinking it’s the latter. Theo has a hand in this move, make no mistake about it. JH isn’t handing over 120 million dollars to Breslow. He handed this money directly to Theo Epstein, the man who knows how to make a splash. This feels more like A Curt Schilling type of move, more like a Daisuke move. Then a move the current Chief of Baseball Operations could or worse would pull off.
If i am right or wrong it makes no difference in the grand scope of things, ( i’m not wrong. ) The Red Sox have a new set of issues to deal with, what to do at third base. I told you we would get to it. Bregman has opt outs after the first two years of this deal. Do you want an unhappy gold glove winner with options or do you want your face of the franchise who has nine years and 270 million dollars left on his recently signed deal to be pouty ? Someone’s not going to be thrilled. But it won’t be me. I love this move. because another issue is. They just got a lot better
